Ligfærd – Med Død For Øje

Written by: Waffen

The bands of Denmark have over the last decade been lying dormant within the underground, smouldering  with intent and igniting only those intrepid enough to seek them out. Unspoiled by the mainstream it is a pure scene and only recently have a select few bands ventured forth seeking to ignite those whose paths they cross. Ligfærd, now in their tenth year, are set to rain down their firey debut album Med Død For Øje.

They employ a seemingly unintentional mix of different styles with a good dirty production and a hefty bass but treble led attack. The vocals remind me of hardcore in the intonation of their bellowing but they retain a heavy Black Metal style in sound. Slower sections pack a punch with sharp riffs and quality drumming and prove that you don’t need to play constant blast beats to create harsh darkness. Ligfærd don’t discriminate though and their fast is as good as their slow and just as represented.

Den Fejlslagne Nedmaning rips it up for two and a half minutes like an enraged bear on speed trapped in an electrified net. Not content to simply hammer out a riff for the duration of the song like some inferior bands they pause momentarily for a short riff break then go ballistic again. Its enjoyable stuff and thanks to the production carries a very subtle Viking atmosphere into the next anthemic track ‘Gravhojens Urkraft’.

This one chugs along and will invoke mental images or perhaps real visitations of the spirits of long-dead Danish warriors preparing for battle, depending on how many magic mushrooms you’ve consumed. In fact the next offering ‘De Hedenfarnes Lig’ is a properly trippy little Black Metal ditty and acts both as a nice outro for the previous song and an intro for the next up.

Towards the back of the album there are some quality samples that I’m sure are taken from that same movie that Abigor utilised on Verwüstung. Although musically very different Ligfærd also achieve an intense medieval ambience from it. ‘Under Manens Aftag’ has some of the best riffing on the cd and is really a quality song to behold featuring really well timed riff progression and changes welded together with the  furious pummeling of drums and alterations of pace.

The whole album is extremely well thought out and put together and will see this band move into the elite of the Danish scene once it is released and will surely gather quite a horde under its banners. There are several songs to check out on Myspace and I recommend that you do.
