Mare – Throne of the Thirteenth Witch
I love it when a band plays music that is comparable to either their name or song titles. Mare do just that on this 7″ EP. Its another indication of the importance of Nidrosian Black Metal as probably the most important scene for both Europe and the whole World.
Even though there are only 2 songs totaling just over fourteen minutes the band pack a shit load of grim magical atmosphere into it. Long haunting passages, ghastly echoing vocals, pulsating drums and coarse production make this a must hear for any serious underground fanatic.
It contains a wide range of sound from fast blasting to medium paced to slow dirges. There’s also quite a bit of keys but they are there solely to inflict the hideously descriptive and gripping atmosphere upon the listener.
So descriptive in fact that you can see the decrepit old crone slumped on the throne, holding tight a gnarled old walking stick fashioned from dead stuff. Her legs are splayed and you can almost smell the noxious and sulphuric faint green mist that wafts out from between her dank, moldy and elongated labias with a disturbing sluggishness.
I’m not making that up, this really is that grim. If you can find a copy (which is unlikely as only 500 were pressed) get it because this is pure quality Black Metal. There is nothing more that can be said about it.
