Idolater – Black Sexual Blasphemy

Written by: Waffen

Purveying Anti-Christian Black Metal one man band Idolater cut a clear path through the American Bible belt with their scythe, ice cold sound, vehemence and interesting song writing.

The brains behind the music belong to The Idolater and he informed me that all seven tracks are written making extensive use of minor-second chords! I’m no practical student of music so I don’t know what the fuck that means.

What I do know however, is that it makes for an unusual and distinctive sound to be sniffed up and as ‘Monolatry’ sets the scene with high pitched pummeling. It takes you a few listens to get your ears accustomed to the sound but once they have adjusted you’ll enjoy this approach.

‘Lux Et Luxuria’ bleeds in seamlessly from the opener and could be the same song but the music changes suddenly and in a subtle way that you’ll only notice after the new riff has been going for a while. There’s also a really sinister edge to the guitars that draw you into the song and although the percussion offers nothing amazing they function as a foundation admirably.

During ‘Covetous Onerous’ The Idolater lets rip some quality precise barking orders like a general commanding a Medieval assault. This is yet again an evil sounding track making use of more medium paced tempo. There is a haunting middle section that utilises a splash of melody alongside quick riffing and it adds a touch of bleak emotion before it re-enters the realm of unrelenting high pitched belligerence.

‘The Passion In My Heart’ stands out as one of the more upbeat and interesting tunes as it pulses angrily through five minutes of fierce propaganda. Sounding like a swarm of killer hornets on the rampage it marks the zenith of the Idolater’s creativity on this release.

Following not far behind it ‘The Amour’ also has some excellent technical riffage that coalesces into a song with the aid of a nasty old school power chord bridge section and powerful vocals.

There is certainly no lack of atmosphere on Black Sexual Blasphemy which is a fine accomplishment considering the limited tonal variation. Far from being a negative point though that range of tones has given the album a distilled and refined quality that will make Idolater stand out from the gathering masses of the American scene and all the tracks flow together with thoughtfulness and maintain the overall thrust even when switching to slower tempos.

Overall this debut is well above average and offers something different and is sure to gain deserved recognition.

I have to say I’m fuckin’ impressed by this! how awesome this sounds, there’s something that differentiates this from the other 1 zillion bands out there.. great atmosphere.. his “statement” on myspace sounds a bit pompous but maybe he really believes that shit.. one of the best bands reviewed by hellfurnace.
