Occult Crypt – Nebelwerfer

Written by: Waffen

Grab your old SS uniforms, smack down those infantry helmets and slip into your paratrooper boots. Oh yeah, and don’t forget your fucking Nebelwerfer! I’ve listened to tons of NSBM recently and to be totally honest 99% of it has been shite. Focusing on hate propaganda under the guise of extremely dire music it has offered me nothing. Until now.

Occult Crypt don’t use shock tactics, like dead Jews on their covers or shit like that, instead they let the music do the talking. The politics, if there is any, is kept to such a subliminal level that even Simon Wisenthal wouldn’t fail to be impressed by this! Right from the start of ‘Exterminate’ you realise that this is quality raging Black Metal powered by intense drumming with swift double bass drums, hefty bass and crisp but beefy guitar.

It lives up to its name magnificently rumbling away with all the ferocity of an artillery battle. After a minute or so it slows down into a medium tempo military sounding riff that’ll inspire the listener like a man to man chat with the Fuhrer himself. Then the shells are reloaded and the barrage in unleashed upon your ears once more. There is even a competent solo towards the end of the track, something which is all too often neglected these days and it ends appropriately with a nice explosion.

The title track is next up and carries on in a similar vein to the opener but the core of it is a great marching anthem with great great vocals and relentless kick drumming. There are some drum breaks too but they always drop back in with proficient fills. ‘Volk Unter Dem Banner Der Sonne’ features one of those riffs that builds up nicely in speed with key changes but has a slower chorus section.

‘As The Machine Rolled On (Panzerkrieg)’ is a powerful instrumental with samples of Nebelwerfers in action and rounds out with one of those German wartime songs. Finishing off the EP is a cover of Autopsy’s song ‘Twisted Mass Of Burnt Decay’ from the album Mental Funeral which fits into this chunky style excellently. This is a vicious little Promo that is competently written and played with good solid production and definitely a band to watch for the future.
