Kill – No Catharsis

Kill - No Catharsis 2009

The night sky pisses rain onto the ground. The damp earth rips open, and once again Kill rise up from their dark, steaming hole to deliver undead Black Metal to us all!

Finally, the long-awaited No Catharsis is here…  The opener, ‘Rites of Bestiality’ immediately sprays you with its stinking riffs, and you can almost hear the black vomit gurgling in Warslaughter’s throat. Oh yes, this is proper soily, plague-ridden Black Metal, best enjoyed at maximum volume!

Anyone who enjoyed the infectious, doom-ridden riffs of 2007’s Inverted Funeral will notice that Kill have shifted to a more aggressive, thrashy style this time. The songs are generally faster and shorter, but there’s still plenty of changes in pace throughout.

The stompy rhythms that featured in abundance on the last album are used more sparingly on No Catharsis, but to excellent effect. When the faster sections give way and the decayed, catchy riffs kick in and start munching on your ears, you’ll be powerless to resist nodding your head and grimacing along.

The production, particularly Getaz’s thumping drum battery, has a ‘live’ edge to it, without resorting to deliberate under-production. The sound is noisy, yet rich and full, with the deep rumbling bass providing the perfect backdrop for the dirty guitars and savage vocals.

One of my favourite moments is in the middle of ‘Fucking Destruction’. Before the chorus, an absolutely belting mid-paced riff kicks in, accompanied by a perfect belching bark from Warslaughter. Classic Kill! Other grotty highlights include the ferocious ‘417′ and ‘Spear The Redeemer Of Man’, the tortured singing in ‘Eternal Damnation’, the thrusting punk-style riffs of ‘Hellish Lust’, and the slow, heavy title track… From start to finish, this album disgusts me and and I love every fucking minute of it!

No Catharsis again shows that Kill are in a class of their own when it comes to necrotized Black Metal. The heavy, dirty sound… the changes of pace… the undead imagery… it’s all perfect shit for a fuckin’ great drunken gig.  Now I want to see them play live more than ever.
