Wrath Passion Interview

I reviewed the album just after Hellfurnace powered up, now, from the icy Lofoten islands of Norway the terrifying Daniel gave us permission to thaw him out and get an insight into one of the most fucked-up and wierd albums and songwriting minds of the last several years. Behold!

What are the concepts behind Wrath Passion’s music. Is it darkness and Satan or something as unusual and fucked up as your music?

The main consept is the limitless topic of occultism (what’s hidden from most people), eighter by purpose or by their lack of interest of non-commercial shit. Since we are monkeys with little hair all we can do is to copy so the more original input one gets the more original stuff one can create as well, at least that’s my personal experiment.

Satan is of course an icon of individualism and freedom and is therefore integrated as a hidden part of the band name. Fucked up yes, but I think it’s some kind of ‘fuck off’ mentality that makes it obvious for me to make the music sounding sick without caring too much about what the sheeple thinks about it.

Did you start out with a visualisation in your head of how you wanted the songs to be structured or did you piece it all together and add bits to it in the studio?

It’s a bit different story behind each song but common for them all are that they’re composed and recorded simultaniously and not always knowing what song I was actually working on are the main formula.

Vocals are quite sparse on Careful Saint, was that a consious desision or did it just turn out like that and what themes do the lyrics cover?

It’s actually because of deadlines at the record company and that I got Orv (vocalist) involved quite late in the process. Lyric themes well, hard question since I didn’t contribute any lyrics and it’s fucking difficult to understand what’s being sung haha. But one thing I know for sure is that the norwegian lyric on Forpesta, written and performed by Mortem is about our ancient nordic culture being imperialized by christianity some thousand years ago.

Staying with the name of the cd, like everything Wrath Passion, it is unusual. Explain to us the meaning behind the title ‘Careful Saint’?

It’s an anagram like the bandname but this stands for Lucifer Satan, if some of the readers are bad informed about grammar I can inform that it’s when you take each letter of a word or sentence and use each letter exactly once to form new words.

Why did you choose not to have a pseudonym? Or is Daniel a pseudonym and your real name Kommandant-Angel-Fister?

No it’s the name my mother decided before I could resist and being more or less a one man band already under psaudonym via the band name.

How did you secure the deal with Infest Records because you haven’t done any demos or EPs?

We was already in talk of participation on a compilation CD, but I suggested a full Wrath Passion release instead and they agreed on that.

It has been some time now since the album has been released and I know the response has been great but do you have any idea of how many units you’ve sold and are you satisfied with that?

I don’t know much about how much the diffrent distros has sold and I’ve still got some copies left myself.

What drives your creative process? Do you have any habbits or rituals you like to invoke before during or after creating? Like banging your cock against a tractor tyre for example.

I just grab my guitar and start playing something.

A few years back Dark Funeral did a scratch and sniff limited edition which stank of old tyres. Mine did anyway. If you did one similar what smell would you have?

Really? En stram eim av tetrahydrocannabinol.

What are you going to have written on your headstone or death monument when you die? Also if you could errect a monument in honour of yourself to mark your demise what would you have crafted?

Maybe a relief of a middle finger pointing upwards just to choose something neutral that is understood by all. To the latter part of the question: A thick gold ring around the planet with no foundation whatsoever, just hoovering in the air by the pressure from the opposite side of the earth at any given location. Engraved with my silhouette every six hundred and sixtysixth meter.

How do you view the state of the world today regarding mass commercialism and people who crave the trappings of success and wealth through mateialism?

From my point of view the state is MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction.

Do you have a favourite disaster from history either man-made or natural and what do you find so interesting about it?

The whole history is a great disaster and that’s interesting in itself…

Whats your favourite album of all time?

I really don’t know.

What would you most like to see performed live? It can be anything. Mine, for example, is several dwarves dressed in capes and party beaks riding wild boars on an oiled bouncy castle accompanied by Tsjuder’s Desert Northern Hell Album.

The Pope speeching on glowing coal.

What’s the most disgusting thing you can think of?

The future.

  2. Usually, many dudes haven’t no idea why besides being a “rock star” or possing as a tough teenager are in footsteps in the black metal, but in few words, this guy can reflect complex ideas in his music, however, to be really creative in this overpopulate world of BM, must be a quite weird…or totally being a MAD Fucker, often the creatives have many topic to talk, not exclusivelly talk about Satanism, Misantrophy, War or supremacism, race superiority. Usually mentions of being an apolitic band means implicit sights in political issues without trying to lead opinion of the listener or fans, perhaps, filosophic concepts, mocking of social taboos, the vile and crappy behavior of politicians and the nature death for the man unconciousness exploits. Womans: woman is gettin more protagonismo in this scene, a healthy hordes of womans taking the asault in tihs genre, not in number as many want see, but still grow the number of womans in black metal, as a warrios, htem can be mean and brutal many times in more degree as the men.

I just find this zine surfing on the net…but soon it will be filtered by the “good guys”, ha, ha,ha)so, i enjoy it for this moment.

Mexico is plenty of black metal bands, but the underground you find many bands playing and breathing Black Metal vision as it mean to be, but is the less supported for the “rocker” promotors, big labels only looking comercial music honey flavored shit and girlie boys in totally homo posse, the organizations supporting BLack Metal are almost the same band’s players, in self financing their own records and making the distribution by themselves, fortunately, many distros growing today in such places on the country, Mexico, helping the difusion of Mexican Black Metal to the rest of country and rest of world…with the strong cooperation of European and American Distros, of course.
