Malkuth – Sefirah Gevurah

As society continues to rot before me in a vulgar mass of intense gluttony and greed I constantly turn to music for purification. I feel it imperative that the music I listen to is as pure as possible and unsoiled by the current ills of mankind.

More and more I’m indulging in the deepest chasms of the underground to find music that absorbs the negativity, anger and hate that builds up within me and channels it into positivity.

The ether unbloated by the inflated ego and money of fame and stardom is where I find that which I seek. Minimalistic, simple and raw. True. Pure.

Malkuth has become, over recent weeks, a ray of grim art encompassing the virtues of real music listed above. As the American scene produces some popular mainstream groups other bands more worthy of note flourish underneath but ultimately far above them. Malkuth is one of those and Sefirah Gevurah really is an album to behold.

The first few raw seconds of the album grabbed my attention but I was waiting for the bass and heavy guitars to kick in. When they didn’t materialize I listened intently, fascinated by the band’s lack of need to play really fast and complicated tunes. Just simple Black Metal at is base level akin to those demos and albums of the early Scandinavian era that marked the true direction of the scene.

It bears plentiful scars of influence and more than a passing nod to some of the great bands but retains its own integrity. The second track ups the tempo somewhat though and pumps the rawness further towards the end of the scale. Especially the vocals which are utterly grim, raw, dark and of superbly undead quality, like singing through lungs half filled with gravel and soil. Accompanied with more simple but nasty and effective guitars and grumpy stumpy drumming which is executed, surely, by a troll with it’s kit in a big sack continually smacking it against the side of a glacier!

Berehit Bara Elohim, track three, brings us back down into a slower, more depressing atmosphere. You know my feelings about depressive Black Metal, but because this is so totally harsh the song dosen’t fail but feels more like an album filler. Track four gets the CD back on track and is resplendent in simple grimness and this dosen’t wain until the album finishes as the remaining tracks keep up the savagery and don’t disappoint.

I know I have used the words grim and raw a lot to describe Malkuth so far but it really is. To try to put it into context this album is as raw and grim as sliding down a mile long fine grade cheese grater on your bell end. Or if you are female sliding down said cheese grater using your labia for brakes.

Sounding like it was recorded in a garage, the production is adequate but enhances the music overall and after several listens I reckon its very good and exactly the correct choice. If they’d used expensive and clean style recordings in a state of the art studio the album could have been written off as shit. I’m glad they didn’t.

There are some weird song titles going on too: Nukka Si-Tehoma Rabba and Kizzuz Ha-Netiyyot lead me to believe they had employed spastic children to type out their song names but after a little research I discovered that they are written in Hebrew. In fact Malkuth means some stuff in the Hebrew religion but I’m not gonna write about it here because I know fuck all about religion and am not about to infect this website by blabbing on about it.

Whether this album is religious or political in any way I neither know nor care. It is a quality slab of musical purity (to my ears) and is well worth getting hold of if you enjoy your Black Metal underfunded and raw. If you aren’t into that style then I’d advise you stay well away and leave this to the professionals!
